Gary Calton was born in 1967, Sheffield, UK. After training and working as a teacher he moved to London to start a postgraduate course in photojournalism. His first published work was a documentary project on Young Offenders, which appeared in The Observer newspaper, whom he has continued to work for since 1992.
He continues to work for many major domestic and international newspaper, magazines and supplements, covering the major international events and producing self generated documentary project. He also works for many International NGO's.
In 1997 he received a discretionary grant from the W.Eugene Smith Memorial Award to continue a project on Working Men’s Clubs. In 2000 was invited to attend the World Press Masterclass and exhibited Tuberculosis: Captain of the Armies of Death at Visa pour L’Image, Perpignan, this project also won the International Award for Documentary Photography and Medal of Excellence, 2002 from the Fiftycrows Foundation.
He is currently completing a mixed media project, 'Citizens' of Our Time.'
Gary is based in his native Yorkshire and London, UK.
